Guwahati’s Iconic Reboti Chat House Served Closure Notice

Guwahati: The Food Safety Department has issued a closure notice to the iconic and famous chat house located in Pan Bazaar area of the city – Reboti Chat House – for a period of seven days for failing to maintain the basic hygiene standards.

During an inspection carried out by the Food Safety Department of Kamrup (Metropolitan) District, it was found that the kitchen of Reboti Chat House didn’t conform with the sanitary and hygiene requirements and other food measures.

The inspection team found that the kitchen area is cramped, unclean and does not have enough space for manufacturing and storage to maintain an overall hygienic environment.

Floors, ceiling and walls of the restaurant were found in a dilapidated condition, utensils and other necessary items were kept in an unhygienic manner and there are no provisions to keep cooked and raw food separately, the team mentioned.

It was found that there is no proper arrangement for drinking water for customers and water storage tanks are kept dirty and are kept in an open area where contamination may likely occur.  The inspection team also mentioned that there is no proper drainage system for the disposal of refused items and the food handles don’t wear aprons, hand gloves and caps.

The Food Safety Department has ordered the restaurant to renovate the entire property within the given stipulated time.

It may be mentioned, this chat house is one of the oldest fast food joints in Guwahati. Reboti Chat House is a popular hangout spot for college students like Cotton College, Handique Girls’ College. The Chow mein served in this eatery is quite popular among the students.
