    Guwahati To Host India’s First 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier Match

    Guwahati: The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, also known as the Sarusajai stadium, in Guwahati will host the first Indian football team’s opening 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match. This was informed by All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary, Kushal Das on August 1st, 2019, as per media reports.

    The Indian football team will face Oman in Guwahati in the second round of Asian Qualifiers on September 5th, 2019.

    Notably, the Indian football team has been drawn alongside 2022 FIFA World Cup host Qatar, Oman, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Group E matches and the first match is against Oman.

    The Sarusajai stadium located in Lokhra i is a football stadium and is the current home ground of Northeast United FC, an Indian professional football club. The stadium has a total capacity of 35,000 which was later reduced to 23,850 due to the installation of bucket seats for the 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

    The stadium in the year 2007, hosted the 33rd National Games of India and in 2016, it hosted the South Asian Games.
