The senior Congress leader and five-time Dibrugarh parliamentarian Paban Singh Ghatowar on August 20th, 2019, proclaimed his stern decision not to leave the Congress. He said, “I am still in Congress. There is no question about leaving the party. Rumours have been spread by a certain section against me.”
While citing the example of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s journey to BJP, he said, “Change of party is not a new thing. It happens from time to time in politics. Even CM Sarbananda Sonowal moved from other party to BJP.”
Talking about recent joining of some Assam Congress leaders in the saffron party, Ghatowar said, “The leaders who enjoyed utmost power in Congress now shifted to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to fulfil their vested interest.” While stressing the need to solve the party issues on the party floor rather leaving the party, Ghatowar said, “There might be some dissimilarity among the leaders in the party which is common in each and every party. The leaders, who shifted to BJP, are only to fulfil their vested interest,” he said. The former Union Minister of State (Independent), Health and Family Welfare further said, “There are allegations against them also. People of the state will take the final call on them.”
It may be mentioned that the former Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Bhubaneswar Kalita had quit the Congress and joined the BJP. Later, former Barak valley Congress leader Gautam Roy and former Rajya Sabha MP Santiuse Kujur also joined the BJP.
