Former Assam Assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi Passes Away in Guwahati

Former Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker and sitting Sivasagar MLA Pranab Kumar Gogoi passed away in Guwahati on the night of February 3rd, 2020. The mortals remain will be taken to Sivasagar where his last rites will be performed on February 4th, 2020.

Condoling the demise of Gogoi, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the former Assam Assembly Speaker has left behind a rich legacy of public service.

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi too condoled the death of former Speaker. In a statement, Governor Mukhi said, “Demise of the veteran political leader is a great loss to the socio-political firmament of the state”.

“As the former Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, late Gogoi worked to enrich the values and tenets of parliamentary democracy.  His death is an irreparable loss and would create a void,” the Governor added.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora mourned the demise and said that Assam will “ever remember him as a dedicated Congressman, administrator and legislator”.

Gogoi was born in 1936 in Dibrugarh and was the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.  He was also a minister in the former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi cabinet.

All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev tweeted that she is “extremely sad to hear about the passing away” of Gogoi.

Assam Bharatiya Janata Party president Ranjeet Kumar Dass also condoled the demise of Gogoi as shared that he accumulated a “well of knowledge” from him during his tenure as an MLA in opposition.

The veteran Congress leader breathed his last at the Health City Hospital in Guwahati at around 10:40 pm on February 3rd, 2020. He was 84.

He was the elected representative from Sivasagar Assembly constituency for successful four consecutive terms since 2001. A pall of gloom has descended in Sivasagar following the news of his demise.

Congress party workers and politicians cutting across political lines expressed profound grief and sorrow at the passing away of Gogoi.
