Family Of Freedom Fighter From Sarupathar Missing From Final Assam NRC List

Former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi had presented Sachindra Nath Bhattacharjee with a tamra patra for his active participation in the freedom struggle

As the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) got published on August 31st, 2019, the family members of Shachindra Nath Bhattacharjee, a freedom fighter who took part in the movement to free India from British rule, didn’t find their names in the list.

Bhattacharjee had actively taken part in the freedom movement against the colonizers and in the year 1972, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had presented him with a tamra patra to acknowledge his contribution in the freedom struggle.

Bhattacharjee’s son, Sameer said, “We had used the legacy of my father who fought for the country’s freedom from Britishers but still, our names didn’t figure in the final NRC list. We had submitted all the requisite documents in the Foreigners Tribunal and the officials had promised us that our names will be in the list. This is shocking for us.”

Sameer’s family which includes his wife and his two daughters were excluded from the final NRC. They are residents of Sarupathar town in Golaghat district.

Sameer also said that his father had completed his matriculation examination in the year 1971 from the Kalibari High School and later dedicated his life for the country.

It may be mentioned, a total of 3,11,21,004 persons have been included in the final NRC that released on August 31st, 2019 while 19,06,657 persons have been excluded from the list.
