‘End Of An Era For Indian Rock Music’: Fans Mourn Death Of Parikrama’s Lead Guitarist Sonam Sherpa

Fans and rock and roll lovers are mourning the death of the legendary artiste Sonam Sherpa–founding member and lead guitarist of the Indian rock band Parikrama who passed away at Kurseong on February 14th, 2020.  He was 48.

The news of his death was informed on the blue ticked social media handles of Parikrama as tributes started pouring in from all quarters remembering the contributions of the guitarist.

“With a very heavy heart, we regret to inform the sudden demise of our backbone, Mr SONAM Sherpa. It’s very very tough to lose a bandmate, a brother and a mentor. Thank you all for all your messages and tributes” Parikrama wrote yesterday.

In another Tweet, the band updated that the prayer service of Sherpa will be conducted on February 16th at 2 pm followed by his burial at 3 pm at his hometown in Kalimpong.

Bollywood Actor Farhan Akhtar took to Instagram to condole the loss of a “gifted guitarist” and shared his encounter with Sherpa.

“I was part of a 4 city tour with the amazing #Parikrama and I can never forget or adequately say how thankful I am for the love and warmth that #SonamSherpa extended to this first-timer on stage.. he was a gifted guitarist, a supremely cool guy and a true rock star. RIP brother. Deepest condolences to his family. On stage and off it.” Farhan wrote.

Music composer Ehsaan Noorani paid tributes to the artiste said that he will remember the jams and hangouts.

Although the cause of death was not specified, several media outlets have reported that Sherpa had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Remembering the legend fans wrote “It is an end of an era in the Indian Rock Scene. May the pious soul rest in eternal peace” while another wrote “He was an inspiration for an entire generation !! … a humble soul”.

Life History

Sherpa did his schooling in Kalimpong, West Bengal from St. Augustine’s School. He went to Delhi for higher studies. He was a founder member of the band Mrigya and North East Express.

Later he went on to join the rock and roll band Parikrama in 1991. He remained as the lead guitarist in the band until his death. Sherpa was featured on CNBC’s Young Turks, a show focusing on young entrepreneurs.
