Delhi Violence: Former Assam CM Seeks Amit Shah’s Resignation, Says Modi Govt Interfering With Judiciary

Veteran Congress leader came down heavily on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government over the midnight transfer of Justice Muralidhar

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked Home Minister Amit Shah to resign in the wake of the violence in North East Delhi, in which over 30, including a head constable, have been killed.

Hitting out at the Centre, Gogoi said, “The Delhi violence has proved that the Centre has failed to maintain the law and order, provide security to all sections, communities of people. Shah has miserably failed to maintain peace and harmony and must resign. He is responsible for the situation in the capital territory.”

Gogoi also blamed BJP leaders like Anurag Thakur for creating an atmosphere of fear with hate speeches. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to take any step to restore peace in Delhi,” he added.

The ongoing violence in Northeast Delhi erupted after clashes between pro and anti-CAA protesters on February 23rd, 2020. Besides the casualties, over 200 others have been injured in the deadliest violence in the national capital in decades. The incident came at a time when US President Donald Trump was visiting India.

When asked about incidents of violence during his two-day India visit, Trump had said, “As far as the individual attacks, I heard about it, but I didn’t discuss that with him (PM Modi). That’s up to India.” Trump termed his first state visit to India a “grand success”.

Taking a dig at Modi, Gogoi said, “It’s hard to say whether Trump’s praises for Modi were real or a joke.”

The Former Assam Chief Minister also slammed the Centre over the transfer of Justice S Muralidhar, who was hearing the Delhi violence case.

Judge Muralidhar had lambasted the Delhi Police for not acting during the violence. He has been transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the midnight of February 26th, 2020.

Gogoi said the Modi government interferes with the judiciary and that is a dangerous signal for the whole country. “The Modi-led government has not allowed the judiciary to function independently. It is a dangerous sign for the democracy of the country. Our constitution provides the independence of the judiciary and Modi government is interfering with it.”

He added, “The number of Godse followers is on the rise and hence, the entire country is suffering. The people or political leaders who made inflammatory speeches leading to such violence and are involved in such acts should be dealt with iron hands without any concern for their political affiliations.”

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval visited the violence-hit parts on February 26th, 2020 to bring the situation under control. Post the visit, the Delhi Police has filed 18 FIRs and arrested 106 people for their involvement in riots so far.
