A day after Iran launched missiles at US forces in Iraq, two rockets crashed into the Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone. It is a high-security enclave where foreign embassies including the US mission are based, media reported.
The incident took place after top Iranian commander General Qassem Soleimani was laid to rest in his hometown of Kerman on January 8th, 2020. Iran has vowed to avenge Soleimani’s death.
Soleimani was killed along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces, an Iran-backed umbrella organisation comprising several militias in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport in Kerbala, Iraq.
Following the killing of Soleimani by Washington in an airstrike, Iran has unfurled a red flag on top of the iconic The Holy Dome of Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, which is an old Shi’ite tradition symbolising bloody revenge.
US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to hit 52 Iranian sites “very fast and very hard” if Iran attacks Americans or US assets.
However, Trump on January 8th, 2020 tried to stop short of escalating tensions with Iran and insisted that the US is ready to embrace peace.
