India has now registered over 70,000 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, according to the Union Health Ministry.

A total of 70,756 cases of coronavirus has been registered, as per the latest figures from the Union Health Ministry.

3,604 new cases and 87 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. Over 22,400 people have recovered after testing positive while 2,293 people have died, as per the Health Ministry’s dashboard at 8 am.

Experts said that the recent surge in the number of cases could be due to the rise in testing.

The nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the highly contagious virus is likely to be extended beyond May 17th, 2020. However, a number of restrictions may be eased in areas that are not severely affected, as per several media reports.

PM Narendra Modi held a review meeting via video conferencing with the Chief Ministers. Modi has asked states to send in suggestions for changes to the current rules by May 15th, 2020.
