
Condolences poured in from various quarters after the demise of former Assam Director General of Police Khagen Sarma on October 26th, 2019 with top leaders and Assam Police recalling his contributions towards ensuring peace in the state capital.
The 1982-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre passed away at around 7.15 pm at the Sun Valley Hospital in the city on Friday. He was suffering from cancer for a long time. The last rites of Sarma will be performed here with full police honours today.
Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal on October 25th, 2019 said that he is deeply saddened by the demise of the Former cop chief.

Offering condolences to the Sarma’s family, Assam Police tweeted, “The Assam police fraternity is deeply saddened on the untimely demise of Shri Khagen Sarma, IPS – former DGP, Assam. A 1982 batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, he was instrumental in bringing peace to the region. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
Veteran Congress leader and ex-chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi hailed him as a ‘competent’, ‘intelligent’ and a ‘brilliant’ officer. He tweeted, “Deeply anguished to learn about the demise of former DGP, Assam Police Khagen Sarma. He was a competent, intelligent and brilliant officer. He worked with me for a long time during our tenure to contain the insurgency to a great extent. My condolences to the bereaved family.
Sarma took charge as the DGP in 2014 after the retirement of the then DGP Jayanta Narayan Choudhury.
