Citizens’ Body Stages Protest At Jantar Mantar, Demands Error-Free NRC

The forum raised a demand for the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) probe into the illegal buying and selling of legacy data.

Amid resentment brewing among people over the re-verification notices for National Register of Citizens (NRC) credentials, the Sachetan Nagarik Mancha staged a protest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on August 17th, 2019 demanding an error-free register of bonafide citizens.

The Manch disseminated their voices against the deadline of August 31st, 2019 set by the Supreme Court and urged to withdraw the publication by passing an ordinance while alleging that many foreigners have already got their names enlisted in the final draft of Assam NRC. The Mancha also demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) into the alleged illegal buying and selling of legacy data.

The Supreme Court on August 13th, 2019 ordered that the list of those excluded from the final Assam NRC be published only online on August 31st, 2019. The apex court also rejected the government’s demand to reopen and re-verify NRC in Assam.
