CID Seizes Contraband Cough Syrups Worth Rs 10 Lakh In Guwahati

The CID has arrested five persons in connection with the seized consignment


On May 7th, 2020 on the basis of specific source information, a team of CID officials intercepted one fully covered TATA ACE van followed by one Wagon-R on the Service Road of NH37 in Lokhra with a huge cache of illegal contraband cough syrups worth Rs 10 Lakh.

A CID statement read, “On being enquired, the occupier of the Wagon-R came forward and revealed that the van is carrying fruits belongs to him. However, on a thorough search of the TATA Ace van, apart from some bunches of bananas, two secret chambers, one behind the driver’s cabin and another beneath the cargo floor stacked with 30 (thirty) cartoons of Tripkoff cough syrup with Codeine Phosphate have been recovered.”

The statement added that on query, as no supporting documents were found, the cough syrups have been seized as contraband meant for drug abuse.

The CID further state that to mislead the authorities, one permit was issued from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Nagaon to ply vehicles to carry fruits. It was found affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle, but the number of the vehicle was absent in the permitted list.

The CID added, “On the lead of the detained persons, the godown of Nitco transport within Lalgudam compound was found to be the loading point of the consignment of cough syrup.”

The godown was raided on the lead and the team found another 59 cartons of Cough Syrup of different Brand names. All these were seized as the officials of Nitco Transport failed to produce supporting documents regarding stock of contrabands.

The seized consignments of psychotropic substances were procured in the name of one JP Pharma (drug distributor) located at Rajgarh road which is owned by one PradipTalukdar and being sold to different locations illegally for drug abuse at exorbitant prices.

In the entire operation, the Dog Squad of CID, Assam played a vital role in detecting the consignment of contrabands kept concealed in two different secret chambers in the vehicle specially made beneath the floor of the said vehicle for transporting Psychotropic Substances.

However, on a subsequent operation, the CID team conducted another search at Panigaon Kachalukhowa, Nagaon and one Nekib Ahmed was apprehended and another five cartoons of Coffcy CD cough syrup was recovered and seized from his illegal possession.

In this connection, FIR was submitted and CID PS Case No. 10/2020 u/s 22(c)/29 NDPS Act is registered and an investigation is in progress.

The arrested persons have been identified as Abdur Rahman, Iman Ali, Nazrul Ali, Pankaj Mishra and Jiten Dutta.

While two persons have been declared as absconding namely Pradip Talukdar and Ruful Khan.
