The situation went out of control near Jamia Millia Islamia University in the national capital in the afternoon hours of December 15th, 2019 as protesters opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) came face-to-face with police.
The police used tear gas shells and lathi-charged to disperse the raging crowd at the University. Nearly 50 students who were reportedly injured and were sent to the hospital. Fresh violence erupted in the nearby places, as metro station gates were shut and schools in Southeast Delhi were declared closed.
Post the incident, thousands of students from different universities, teachers marched towards Jantar Mantar and the Delhi Police Headquarters agitating against the police high-handedness towards Jamia students.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the meantime has appealed for peace and added that they cannot accept violence. “Protests should remain peaceful,” he said.
Similar protests were witnessed at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Sunday evening. At least 60 students were reportedly injured after a clash with the police. At the stroke of midnight, several students coming from universities took to the streets in solidarity for the Jamia students.
The Maulana Azad University slammed Delhi Police over its actions against Jamia and AMU students.
In Mumbai, students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences took out a candlelight march. The students of IIT Bombay also joined protests with torches and placards expressing solidarity with Jamia students.
