Budget 2020: Jobless Engineers To Get Internship Opportunities With Urban Local Bodies

Sitharaman said that National Police University and National Forensic University will be set up in the country

In Budget 2020 announcement, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1st, 2020 proposed to offer internship opportunities by urban bodies to fresh, unemployed engineers for one year. The announcement comes at a time when India is struggling with all-time high unemployment rates since Independence.

Presenting the Budget, Sitharaman said Rs 99,300 crore has been allocated for the education sector and Rs 3,000 crore for skill development for the fiscal year 2020-21. She mentioned that the Centre will soon announce a new education policy and it has received over 2 lakh suggestions on it.

Sitharaman said that National Police University and National Forensic University will be set up in the country. The Centre is also planning to allow degree level full-fledged online education programme by institutions ranked in top 100.

To deal with shortage of doctors and medical staff, the government also proposed to attach medical colleges with district hospitals on PPP model. She mentioned that special bridge courses will be designed for teachers, nurses, paramedical staff, caregivers.

“Local bodies take up a lot of public programmes but they often lack manpower. Now the fresh engineers can help out at the local bodies and can also learn a lot. Such an internship could help students plan their future better,” Sitharaman said while announcing the proposal.
