The Gauhati High Court has directed the commissioner of Assam transport department to install Global Positioning System (GPS) in all buses in Guwahati. The court has directed the transport department to ensure that GPS is installed in the buses plying in the city within the next six weeks to track their movement.

The high court has also asked the department to make sure that doors are fixed to the buses for the safety of the passengers. The buses without doors will not be allowed to ply on the roads for a month.

A division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Ajai Lamba and Justice Soumitra Saikia issued these directives in connection with the PIL (72/2016) filed by Rita Das Mozumdar to ease traffic congestion in Guwahati arising out of haphazard parking, ill-management of traffic, unscientific traffic control, etc.
