    Breaking: Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Passes Away

    Senior BJP leaders including Rajnath Singh, Harshvardhan and Nitin Gadkari have reached AIIMS to meet her

    Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj passed away on August 6th, 2019. She was admitted to AIIMS in critical condition after suffering a heart attack on August 6, 2019. Senior BJP leaders including Rajnath Singh, Harshvardhan and Nitin Gadkari have reached AIIMS to meet her.

    Swaraj, after the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, took to Twitter and said, “Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime.”

    Swaraj, who served as Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and chose to sit out of the government this year on account of her health. She also served as Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs (2017-16), Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (2003-04), Minister of Health and Family Affairs (2003-04) and Minister of Information and Broadcasting (2000-03). The nation mourned the death of the leader.  She, who was born on February 14th, 1952, was also a Supreme Court lawyer.

    The President of India Ram Nath Kovind said the country has lost a much-loved leader.


    In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Modi, expressing his pain, said, “Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters and admirers in this very unfortunate hour.”

    “A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people,” the PM further said.

    Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Deeply shocked and anguished by the sudden demise of an extremely valued colleague Sushma Swaraj. Her demise is a monumental loss for us.”

    Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his sadness at the demise of Swaraj. ” Deeply saddened at the untimely demise of Sushma Swaraj Ji, former External Affairs Minister & one of India’s most beloved & tallest leaders. I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family & friends. Her great legacy will continue to inspire us,” the CM tweeted.

    Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also tweeted, “A light has just, shockingly, gone out of our lives. Deeply pained at the demise of our beloved leader Smt Sushma Swaraj ji. A kind-hearted and towering politician with an incredible career, her loss is shocking. I feel a terrible vacuum today.”
