Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on November 6th, 2019, alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is striving to break the society by implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
“The Bill has become a tool for the BJP to break society. Hence, it is trying to reintroduce the bill in the parliament,” Ramesh said while addressing a press conference here in Guwahati.
He further said, “Congress is opposing and will oppose the BJP’s move outside and inside the parliament. It is not just for political purpose but for the greater interest of the country.
The former Union Minister of Rural Development during Congress rule said, “The Bill is unconstitutional. It violates many provisions of the Indian constitution.”
The Bill is likely to be reintroduced in the parliament in its winter session which will begin on November 18th, 2019 and conclude on December 13th, 2019.
The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31st, 2014.
The Bill was passed by the previous Lok Sabha in January 2019 but lapsed in the Rajya Sabha following massive protests in Northeast. The Bill was then referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament.’
