A mob attacked police personnel, burnt tyres and damaged public vehicles in Bamunimaidan area of Guwahati on December 9th, 2019 in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill or CAB.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 9th, 2019 tabled the controversial Bill in Lok Sabha that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there amid strong protests and sloganeering from Opposition leaders.

The incident occurred at around 11:50 am. Eyewitnesses said that the agitators of the pelted stones at the police personnel and damaged the windows of the public buses plying on the route.

Similar incidents were reported in Khanapara area of Guwahati on December 9th, 2019. Protestors attacked and damaged public vehicles in Khanapara. Local police and CRPF jawans later dispersed the crowd.

It may be mentioned, All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union, All Assam Chutia Students’ Union and All Moran Students Union have called for ‘Assam Bandh’ on December 9th, 2019 demanding the government to scarp the Bill. Security has been tightened across the state.

On the other hand, the North East Students’ Organisation has called for a ‘Northeast Bandh’ on December 10th, 2019 following which Gauhati and Dibrugarh Universities have postponed examinations scheduled tomorrow.

Meanwhile, unknown protestors painted anti-Bill slogans slamming Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the freshly-painted walls on the Raj Bhawan Road, Uzan Bazar, Guwahati. The district administration has now deployed workers to repaint the walls.
