Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer from1988 batch, took charge as the new Director General of Police (in-charge) of Assam on November 30th, 2019. The tenure of Kuladhar Saikia, who was on a three-month extension, ended on November 30th, 2019.

A notification issued by the Assam government stated that Mahanta is “allowed to look after the current duties of DGP, Assam in addition to existing duties as the incumbent DGP Kuladhar Saikia will retire on Saturday”.

The Assam government has recommended names of four senior IPS officers to the UPSC to fill in the post. Till a new full-time DGP is selected, Mahanta will look into the duties of a DGP in addition to his existing duties. Mahanta is presently serving as the Special DGP (Border).
