Bhadreswar Buragohain, one of the founder members of banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and veteran Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), passed away in Guwahati after a prolonged illness. He was 73.
The former Sonari MLA passed away at the Dispur Polyclinic in Guwahati on the night of February 26th, 2020. He was elected to the Assam Assembly from Sonari on an AGP ticket in 1985.
Buragohain was actively associated with the Assam Agitation. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. He was later elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1990.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the demise of the veteran leader. The last rites of the ULFA leader turned politician was performed in Guwahati.
It may be mentioned, ahead of the Rongali Bihu way back in 1979, six men met at Rang Ghar in Assam’s Sibsagar and pledged to raise a militant outfit ‘Sangjukta Mukti Bahini Asom’ (ULFA) advocating a ‘sovereign, socialist Assam’.
The core founding members of the ULFA were – Rajib Rajknowar or Arabinda Rajkhowa, Paresh Barua, Samiran Gogoi alias Pradip Gogoi, Golap Baruah alias Anup Chetia and Buragohain along with their ‘mama’ Bhimkanta Buragohain.
