Banned Outfits ASUK, NLFT Call For Shutdown Of Manipur, Tripura On Oct 15

The rebel groups ASUK and NLFT termed the day as “dark period of our history”

Rebel outfits Alliance for Socialist Unity Kangleipak (ASUK) and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) has called for a total shutdown in the Northeastern(NE) states of Manipur and Tripura from 5 am to 5 pm on October 15, marking a protest against the ‘forced merger’ of the two states in the Union of India.

The joint statement signed by H.Uastwng Borok(NLFT President) and N Oken(ASUK Chairman) termed the day as “dark period of our history”.

According to the statement issued by the armed groups, India has been occupying Manipur and Tripura since October 15th, 1949 after the two infamous Merger Agreements of 1949 and that the agreements were signed “under duress” by two authorities of the two kingdoms.

They further claimed that after 70 years of Indian colonization of the states, the “Indian rule has been proved to be a noose around our neck which is tightening ceaselessly,” and that they have become “demographically outnumbered, politically marginalized, economically dependent”.

The NLFT is a Tripuri nationalist militant organization based in Tripura which seeks to secede from India and establish an independent Tripuri state and is an active participant in the insurgency in Northeast. It has an estimated 550 to 850 members. It is listed as a terrorist organization in the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002.
