The Assam government is committed to protecting the rights of indigenous people who will get Constitutional safeguard after a designated committee submits its report very soon, Governor Jagdish Mukhi said on January 26th, 2020 while addressing the citizens.

Hoisting the National Flag on the occasion of 71st Republic Day celebrations in Guwahati, Mukhi said the Assam government is working for the dignity of the Assamese people living in Barak-Brahmaputra and hills-plains during the last three and half years.

“The state government is fully devoted to the rights of the original inhabitants of Assam. That is why we have been working for the last three and a half years in coordination with Barak, Brahmaputra, Pahar, and Valley. Emphasizing the full implementation of Section-6 of the Assam Accord underlines this intent and policy,” Governor said.

He added, “A high-level committee was formed by the Central Government under the chairmanship of Justice Billav Sharma, retired Judge of the Gauhati High Court. This committee consists of highly respected and learned persons of the society, whose knowledge, experience will be benefited by Assam. The committee will submit its report to the Central Government very soon, after which the people of Assam will get the constitutional safeguard and their political, cultural and linguistic rights will be protected forever.”

Governor Mukhi further stated that to implement the Assam Accord properly, concrete steps have been taken to seal the Indo- Bangla border and the remaining open portion will be sealed very soon.

Mukhi also said that the Assam government has prepared a new land policy and has already requested the Centre to declare Assamese as the permanent state language.

“Jati, mati and bheti (community, land and base) are not just slogans, but resolutions. And this determination is unwavering. We are implementing this in our actions and decisions with complete authenticity. With this aim, we made a new land policy, so that the land of the original inhabitants can be protected. It has been decided to grant Rs 10 crore to Assam Sahitya Sabha, Rs 5 crore to Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Rs 3 crore to twenty other Sahitya Sabhas. The government is strengthening all literature meetings so that they can effectively promote the language,” he said.
