Guwahati: With an aim to develop agriculture and to use it for the socio-economic development of the people of the state, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has adopted Morigaon district for development of agriculture and allied activities.
To decide on the modus operandi of implementing the scheme of things, Governor Mukhi sought a detailed report from the agriculture department to take the project off.
The Governor urged upon the in-charge Vice-Chancellor of the Assam Agricultural University Dr Ashok Bhattacharya to formulate plans, draw road maps and help the farmers to go for multiple cropping.
“Researches should be conducted to develop crops which don’t get destroyed during floods. Agriculture and horticulture are the major contributors for the socio-economic development and taken in right earnest, the sectors have the potential in creating huge employment avenues besides ensuring food security, self-reliance and can contribute to the growth of the economy,” he said.
Mukhi said that in order to make the farmers more self-efficient, latest technology should be provided to the farmers so that they can practice multiple cropping.
Stating that agriculture and the allied sectors have a crucial role in the development of State Gross Domestic Product, he added, “These areas should be encouraged to bloom and catapult state’s development. Assam is primarily an agrarian economy where agriculture has a key role to play in pushing forward the economic growth trajectory.”
He said that the agriculture department should act as a force multiplier and maintain constant monitoring to achieve agricultural growth and realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission of doubling the income of farmers by 2022.
“We have to ensure that the income of the farmers is doubled. Morigaon is agriculturally potential district and most of the people are associated with agriculture so developing the district agriculturally will lead to capacity building of the people living in the district,” he said.
Governor Mukhi further asked Deputy Commissioner of Morigaon, Rituraj Borah to conduct monthly meetings and monitor the activities very closely. He also asked Borah to establish value chain and prospective markets so that the farmers get a good return for their crops.
Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Pijush Hazarika thanked the Governor for choosing Morigaon as the model district and also assured to extend all cooperation in making the district agriculturally developed.
Commissioner and Secretary Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Shyam Jagannathan, Secretary and Director of Agriculture Manoj Kumar, Secretary and Director Irrigation and Fishery Rakesh Kumar, Secretary to the Governor Sanjiv Kumar Gohain Baruah, higher officials of agriculture and allied departments were present in the meeting.
