The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha(BGP) on December 29th, 2019 said that Gorkhas in Assam should be recognized as an indigenous community through a gazette notification so that they are ensured with constitutional rights ahead of the implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord which offers land rights.

Sukhman Moktan, National President, BGP, speaking at Gandhi Bhawan at Silchar in the sidelines of BGP NE Zonal Organisational camp in Assam said, “The Gorkhas belong to the Indian indigenous community so the government of Assam should notify them as an indigenous community of Assam through a gazetted notification as soon possible. This will imply that during the implementation of Clause 6 Assam Accord, the constitutional rights including land rights of Gorkhas are protected”.

Clause VI of the Accord, which was signed between the government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement, deals with constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards for Assamese people.
