Assam Girl To Walk To Rashtrapati Bhavan To Remind All To Save Environment

The JNU student will start her journey from the historic Charaideo Maidam on December 1st, 2019

With the growing menace of climate change and its catastrophic implications on the planet, a girl from Upper Assam’s Charaideo district has planned to do a ‘people for tree’ campaign.

The JNU research student Nijora Phukan will walk from the historic Charaideo Maidam to the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi with an aim to spread awareness on the global climate change and environmental pollution. Phukan will start her journey on December 1st, 2019(Sunday).

The Assam girl who originally hails from Desangpani village located in Mahmora Tehsil of Sivasagar district is an active socialist working for environmental protection. She will be conducting the awareness campaign on foot under the banner of ‘Brikhyabandhu’ an NGO which works towards planting trees to tackle climate change.

“The change in weather patterns and global climate change and environmental pollution is alarming. And it is high time we need to aware of the general people about its consequences. We humans need to save the planet,” said Phukan while speaking with the media.

“During this awareness program, I will reach out to the mass of climate change. I urge the public to come and join me in this campaign so that we can jointly voice the concerns,” she added.

Phukan who completed her M Phil from JNU thinks that although there is an environmental protection act, there should be strict policies enacted by the Centre and that people should abide by the laws. She further bats for a university on the environment in the Northeast region.

“We have seen the fires in the Amazon rainforest this year including the dip in air quality in the national capital. So immediate steps should be taken to save the environment,” she added.
