Assam Floods: Victims Share Plight Following Crisis In Relief Camp In Nagarbera

Nagarbera: While over 1 lakh flood-affected people are taking refuge in hundreds of flood relief camps in Assam, the inmates of Badla Tupamari flood relief camp in Nagarbera have complained of a crisis of the basic amenities.

As per the daily flood bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 52,59,142 people have been affected, with 1,47,304 people taking refuge in 290 relief camps as on July 16th, 2019.

A man staying in the flood relief camp said, “Since the last 5 days I and my family are staying in this camp as floodwater ravaged our house in the village. Here we are staying with the livestock together and there is no drinking water in here. Every day we have to take a half kilometre journey just to drink clean water and the government is least bothered about our problems.”

“Every year we face flood-related issues and yet the government is not equipped enough to mitigate the problem. Nobody from the government has visited us to hear our plight, They could visit us only during the elections seeking votes,” another flood-affected victim said.

It may be mentioned, a total of 30 out of 33 districts in Assam have been affected so far as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report as on July 16th, 2019 and 52,59,142 people have been affected. According to official data, five people have died in the flood this year so far while 14 animals have been washed away.

Also, 80 houses have been damaged according to the ASDMA report so far and 468 SDRF and NDRF boats have been deployed in rescue and relief work.

The central government on July 16th, 2019, released Rs 251.55 crore as assistance from the central share of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for 2019-20 as the ravaging flood in Assam continued to deteriorate.
