Assam combat sports player Ayushman Mukherjee has brought laurels to the country by bagging gold at the International Thai Boxing Championship in Bangkok.
A resident of Chenkuri road, Silchar Circle of Cachar district, Ayushman was actively involved in combat sports since his childhood and kept the sports parallelly with his studies.
“He was born into a marginalized family, and never got enrolled in a professional training institute. He practised the game with his own capabilities” a family member said.
In 2019 Ayushman bagged won several competitions held states of Meghalaya and Kerala. He also reached the quarter-finals of world boxing championship in 2019.
On Tuesday he arrived at Guwahati airport and was accorded a warm welcome by his friends and family. Students body took out a massive rally from the airport to welcome the Muay Thai Hero. He was also given Rs 1 lakh economic assistance.
Muay Thai is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This discipline is known as the “art of eight limbs” as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.
The professional league is governed by The Professional Boxing Association of Thailand (PAT) sanctioned by The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and World Professional Muaythai Federation (WMF) overseas.
