Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) surged ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) towards a thumping victory as the counting of votes progressed on February 11th, 2020.
The AAP started building a stage for its victory speech. The victory celebration has already begun at AAP office in Delhi. The party workers and volunteers were seen distributing sweets and dancing their hearts out as early trends are indicating a clear victory for the party.
Slogans of ‘Achhe honge agle paanch saal’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai‘ and ‘Arvind Kejriwal ki Jai‘ could be heard outside the office. Kejriwal asked AAP volunteers not to burst firecrackers during victory celebrations to prevent air pollution.
Kejriwal’s AAP was leading in 58 of the 70 seats in the assembly, while the BJP in 12, according to the Election Commission of India’s website after counting of votes began at 8 am on February 11th, 2020.
The Congress party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years before being voted in 2013, was yet to open its tally.
Political strategist Prashant Kishor, who was roped in to pump up AAP’s election campaign, congratulated voters for “protecting the soul of India”.
As many as 21 centres for counting of votes have been set up in Delhi. The voter turnout for Delhi Assembly elections held on February 8th, 2020 was 62.59 per cent.
