Guwahati:After President Ram Nath Kovind gave his nod to the Triple Talaq Bill turning it into law on August 1st, 2019, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supremo Badruddin Ajmal staunchly opposed the law and termed it as ‘anti-muslim’ and ‘anti-women’.
Speaking with media persons, Ajmal said, “The Triple talaq law is an anti-Muslim law. It will not benefit the women of our community. If the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government really advocates for women empowerment, it should work for the development of women of every religion. 68 per cent Hindu women are victims of divorce in India which is more than Muslim women as only 26 per cent women from my religion are victims of divorce.”
“Triple talaq is an abhorrent to our religion, not just triple talaq, one talaq is unacceptable. The BJP government has failed to solve the problems of Muslim women. In fact, the wave of saffronisation has resulted in clashes between Hindus and Muslims,” added Ajmal.
The MP from Dhubri district further said that as the new law entitles the victim woman to demand maintenance for herself and children, the poor will face a harrowing time as money is a constraint for them.
It may be mentioned, the Triple Talaq law or the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights On Marriage) Act, 2019 which became a law after the President’s assent now makes oral, written or through WhatsApp triple talaq message a criminal offence with provisions of a jail term of up to 3 years. The Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha by 99 votes in favour of it and 84 against it.
The Bill earlier this year couldn’t make through the upper house during the first term of Narendra Modi government though it was passed in the lower house. Later, the Bill was again passed last week in the Lok Sabha amid strong resistance raised by the opposition parties terming it as harassment to Muslims.
