Assam Popular Front of India (PFI) president Aaminul Haque was arrested by Dispur Police. He has been accused of inciting violence during the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill protests in Guwahati last week.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had alleged that the PFI, Campus Front of India and president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress were involved in the attack on the state secretariat or Janata Bhawan – the seat of the BJP government – on December 11th, 2019.

Sarma said that the government will seek a CBI probe into the matter. While addressing a press meet in Guwahati on December 17th, 2019, the minister said that a leading academician was coordinating the “attack” from a “control room”.

Sarma said that academician, who works with a central government educational institution, was instructing the attackers over his mobile phone, to set ablaze the Janata Bhawan in Guwahati.
