Amit Shah To Land In Mizoram To Discuss On Citizenship Bill Today

The BJP chief is scheduled to land in Aizawl today

Union Home Minister and BJP Chief Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the Northeastern(NE) state of Mizoram on October 5th, 2019 to reach out to the region on the Centre’s proposed Citizenship(Amendment) Bill. Assam Minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma is also slated to visit the state for the meeting.

It may be mentioned that Shah, who had visited Guwahati this month to attend the NEDA Conclave had announced that the government will re-introduce the bill and bring to the Parliament in its next session after consultations with stakeholders.

“On October 5, Union Home Minister Sri Amit Shah shall arrive in #Aizwal for a day-long visit. Mizo NGO Coordination Committee shall welcome him and submit a memorandum. There is widespread enthusiasm among people in Mizoram over the visit,” (sic) Himanta wrote on his Twitter.

Ahead of Shah’s visit the state witnessed a massive agitation against his visit. The NGO Coordination Committee, a conglomerate of civil society organisations and student bodies had earlier planned to boycott the visit but called off the protest and decided to meet Shah and submit a memorandum expressing their disappointment with the bill.

The BJP chief is scheduled to land in Aizawl on Saturday and is slated to meet Chief Minister Zoramthanga and other state leaders to discuss about the controversial Bill.

The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31st, 2014. It may be mentioned that the Bill was cleared by the Lok Sabha on January 8th, 2019 but lapsed in the Rajya Sabha.
