    AIBA Women’s World C’ship: Lovlina Assures 2nd Medal; Jamuna Confirms Maiden Medal

    Lovlina Borgohain will be up against China’s Yang Liu in the semi-final

    Assam’s pugilists Jamuna Boro (54kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) entered the semi-finals after their victory in respective quarter-finals in the AIBA Women’s World Championships on October 10th, 2019.

    Sonitpur’s Jamunua assured her second medal in the championship with this win while the 2018 World Championships bronze medalist Borgohain confirmed a medal for a second consecutive year.

    Borgohain outpunched sixth seed Karolina Koszewska of Poland 4-1. She took time to settle into her bout but played smartly and waited for her moments to land some effective punches as her opponent started looking tired. Borgohain would be up against China’s Yang Liu, who shocked top seed Chen Nien-Chin.

    Borgohain marched into the quarterfinals at the championships on October 9th, 2019. She has been selected for her second Women’s World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia without trials. The pugilist represented India for the first time at the AIBA Championship, held in New Delhi, where she won the bronze medal in the Welterweight (69 kg) category in 2018.

    Six-time World Champion Mary Kom today became the most successful boxer in the history of the Women’s World Championship by securing an unprecedented eighth medal by reaching the semi-final in the ongoing World Championship.

    Kom assured herself of at least a bronze medal in the ongoing World Championship after booking her place in the semi-finals of the 51kg category event. She defeated Colombia’s Valencia Victoria, fetching a unanimous 5-0 verdict to make the last-eight stage.
