US President Donald Trump said top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, was “terminated” when he was on the verge of attacking US diplomats but he insisted that Washington is not seeking to topple Iran’s government.

Trump also blamed Soleimani of being responsible for terrorist plots in New Delhi.

“Soleimani contributed to terrorist plots to kill innocent people around the world. His reign of terror is over. We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war,” Trump said in a statement before television cameras in Florida.

Trump alleged that Soleimani was plotting “imminent and sinister attacks” on American diplomats and military personnel.

On the other hand, Iran promised to seek revenge against the US. The death of Soleimani marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Tehran.

As tension escalated over the killing, Trump said, “We have the best military and the best intelligence anywhere in the world. If Americans are threatened, we are prepared to respond.”
