Five blasts, including two by improvised explosive devices (IED), shook Assam on the morning of January 26th, 2020 as the country celebrated Republic Day.

The two IED blasts took place in Dibrugarh and one grenade blast each were reported in Sonari, Duliajan and Doomdooma. However, no one has been injured in the blasts.

The banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) is suspected to be responsible for the blasts. The outfit led by fugitive Paresh Baruah had asked the citizens to ‘boycott’ Republic Day celebrations in the state and remain indoors.

The blasts come days after 644 militants from eight rebel outfits laid down arms in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at a ceremony in Guwahati on January 23rd, 2020. They included 50 ULFA-I cadres.
