23 Arrested In Hailakandi For Not Wearing Masks; Security Beefed Up Along Cachar Border

The Assam Police will impose a fine of Rs 500 on those not wearing a mask in public areas


Hailakandi Police arrested 23 people for not wearing masks or face covers.

Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath said that the police arrested 23 persons for not wearing masks or face covers and registered one case against lockdown violation in the past 24 hours.

It may be mentioned, the Assam Police will impose a fine of Rs 500 under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 (sections 3) on those not wearing a mask in public. 

Altogether 48 cases have been registered and 233 arrests made since the enforcement of lockdown. 

Nath further informed that 13 numbers of motor vehicles have been seized for lockdown violations during the last 24 hours.

“A total of 219 vehicles, including 171 two-wheelers, 15 three-wheelers and 33 four-wheelers have been seized so far. Rs 1,85,900 have been realised by way of fines,” said Nath.

Besides, the district police has arrested three persons and registered eight cases for allegedly “spreading rumours” on social media platforms.

The district police chief further informed that security along the inter-district border has been strengthened following COVID-19 positive cases in neighbouring Cachar district.

“Following COVID-19 positive cases in Cachar district, we have beefed up security along the inter-district border. Proper checking and medical screening of people coming from outside are being conducted,” Nath said.

He added, “Also the inter-state border with Mizoram has been partially opened for incoming people of Assam after the thorough medical screening.”

Movement of people and vehicles except for emergency services and exempted categories have been fully restricted from 6 pm to 6 am, Nath said.
