In a shocking revelation, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has recorded the highest number of suicides with 14 over the past five years. This was informed by the Human Resource Development, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal in a written reply to questions raised in the parliament, Times Now reported.

Sharing the data of suicide-related incidents in the IITs of the country, 50 students committed suicide at the 23 IITs over the past 5 years.  IIT Madras and IIT Bombay have seven student suicides, IIT Delhi has had four suicides, IIT Kharagpur has had five suicides, IIT-Kanpur has had one and IIT-Roorkee two in the last five years.

Recently, a student from Japan committed suicide at the IIT Guwahati. The student was on an exchange programme for three months from the Gifu University of Japan. The student, identified as Kota Onoda, was found dead in the hostel room at IIT Guwahati.

On the other hand, 10 student suicides have been reports at the 20 IIMs in the last five years, said the government in the same reply.
