A Diphu court on February 28th, 2020 sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment in connection with a Jhankar Saikia mob lynching case.
The Diphu District Court on February 24th, 2020, convicted 12 persons and acquitted four others in the 2013 Jhankar Saikia mob lynching case. Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramesh Nath and Havildar Harun Bora are among the four who were acquited by the court.
Jhankar Saikia, a 21-year-old student, and his lawyer-father Haren Saikia were attacked at Diphu bazaar on June 25th, 2013, by a group of auto-rickshaw drivers after they had refused to pay Rs 30 instead of the regular fare of Rs 20.
The incident took place in the presence of three police personnel. On July 1st, 2013, Jhankar succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Guwahati.
A case (No 95/2013) under sections 294, 325, 307, 109, 147, 148, 149, 337, 338, 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered with the Diphu police against the accused. The trial of the case began five years later in March 2018.
